The Covenant Meal

This is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the forgiveness of sins.

BIBLE KJV

Today’s Verse

“And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body.”
Matthew 26:26, King James Version

Throughout human history, meals have been more than just about nourishment—they’ve been sacred times of connection. Around the table, hearts open, relationships are formed, and fellowship deepens. On this particular evening, Jesus gathered with His disciples to share a meal that would mark a turning point—not just in their lives, but in the story of communion with God. Jesus took the bread and said, “Take, eat; this is My body.” Then He took the cup and said, “Drink from it, all of you. For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the forgiveness of sins.”

To the disciples, these words must have been shocking. Bread and wine were common, but never had they been spoken of in this way. Jesus was unveiling a divine mystery: His body would be broken, His blood poured out to establish a new covenant—not based on laws or rituals, but on grace, forgiveness, and fellowship with God. The bread and the cup are not mere symbols; they are sacred signs of a living reality. This is a covenant meal—not a tradition to be taken lightly. When we partake of it, we remember what Christ has done and proclaim what He has promised. As Paul writes: “For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.” (1 Corinthians 11:26)

Jesus was unveiling a divine mystery: His body would be broken, His blood poured out to establish a new covenant—not based on laws or rituals, but on grace, forgiveness, and fellowship with God.

Just as the Israelites remembered their deliverance during Passover, we remember our deliverance from sin and death. The table becomes an altar of remembrance and renewal.

So let us come to the Table—not with routine, but with reverence. Not just to eat, but to encounter. Come to remember the One who gave everything, and to rejoice in the covenant that sets us free and leads to eternal life.

A question for today

Is there an area today where God is inviting you toward covenant?

Let us pray

Prayer

Lord, thank You for the covenant of grace through Christ. Help us partake with reverence, remembrance, and renewed devotion. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

May the truth of God's Word remain with you today, shaping your thoughts, guiding your steps, and drawing you nearer to Christ.
