… and through whom also he made the World. — Hebrews 1:2b .
Earlier, the writer of Hebrews made it clear to us that Jesus is
God’s Son, the appointed heir. Now he points out to us that He is also the
creator of the World. This same idea is mentioned in John 1:3 3 “Through him
all things were made; without him, nothing was made that has been made”,1
Corinthians 8:6 6 “yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all
things came and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ,
through whom all things came and through whom we live”, and Colossians 1:16 16
“For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and
invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have
been created through him and for him”. None of the
writers of the Scripture were present at creation. The only way that they
knew about the creation was because God had told them about it through His
Spirit of revelation; 2 Peter 1:21, 2 Timothy 3:16, 1 Corinthians 2:10-11. But Jesus was there. And He wasn’t merely there as a
passive observer but as the source. What does this mean for us? Why is it
important for us to know this truth about Christ? Paul, when preaching in
Athens and Corinth, declared that “in Him, we live and move and have our being”
Acts 17:28, “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old
things are passed away; behold, all things are become new” 2 Corinthians 5:17.
This acknowledgment of God’s involvement in our lives through
Christ combined with the truth revealed in today’s Scripture all affirm to us
that we can depend on him as the one who cares for his creation. So, when things in life seem to be out of control, we can
trust in the sovereign power of Jesus as Lord over everything. Moses is not
God. The Temple is not God. But Jesus Christ is God in human flesh.
