The Call

… and called to him those he wanted, ... He appointed twelve that they might be with him and that he might send them out to preach. — Mark 3:13–21.

How does it feel to be called to work with others?

To be chosen—singled out from the crowd—not just for recognition, but for relationship and responsibility? This is exactly what happened in Mark 3:13–21.

Jesus did not carry out His ministry alone. His call and choice of the twelve were intentional. If we examined their backgrounds—their families, professions, or personalities—we might wonder why Jesus chose them. But though He took on human form, He remained fully God. He saw beyond appearances and into their hearts. They were different in many ways—tribes, skills, and temperaments—but they were united by one purpose: to walk with Him and be sent out to serve.

This reminds us that we too are called. But with calling comes responsibility. Among the twelve was Judas, who betrayed Jesus. His presence reminds us that being chosen is by grace - but remaining faithful is a daily and personal decision. God's call is not just about where we begin, but how we walk the journey to the end. Serving others often comes at a cost. The disciples were so involved in ministry that they didn’t even have time to eat. Yet they kept going, motivated by love, purpose, and the power of Christ working through them. And still, we see the tender side of ministry—Jesus’ family, concerned for His well-being, came to care for Him. Though they didn’t fully understand His mission, their concern came from a place of love. That moment reminds us: we all need support. Even those who pour out constantly need to be poured into.

Have you recognized God’s call on your life? Are you walking in it with faithfulness and balance? It’s not just about doing the work—it’s about doing it with God, in step with His Spirit, and with the wisdom to rest, reflect, and receive care. May we never forget the honor of being called. And may we also learn balance: serve with passion, but care for others and ourselves. Let’s never take for granted those who serve among us. Be patient with them. Appreciate them. Support them. In doing so, we reflect the heart of Christ Himself.

PRAYER

Lord, thank You for calling me. Help me to walk with You, serve with love, and honor the privilege of being part of Your mission. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
